MODIFICATION NAME FOR AREA 51

2014-05-10

THE U.S. AIR FORCE SLIGHTLY MODIFIES THE OFFICIAL NAME FOR AREA 51:

DET 3, AFFTC is no longer the official name for Area 51, according to Peter Merlin, military aviation historian:
A slight modification was made in July 2012:
“It is now known as Detachment 3, Air Force Test Center (Det 3, AFTC). The word ‘Flight’ was dropped in July 2012 when Air Force Materiel Command consolidated 12 centers to five and test assets from California, Nevada, Florida, and Tennessee were placed under the single command of a lead center at Edwards. In some documents the Groom Lake base has been referred to as the National Classified Test Facility. It was previously known as Area 51 (from about 1958-1978) and Watertown Airstrip (1955-1958).”
